The 2013 version of SharePoint has introduced a number of new efficient processes. One of them is ‘following’, a feature that allows you to follow a selection of SharePoint activities.
You can follow four things in SharePoint 2013:
People – allowing you to follow the activities of your fellow SharePoint users. Follow user discussions, activities, events and updates. As with all things SharePoint, you can edit permissions, choosing which activities you are happy to share with your followers. Activities you can share include:
- Following a person
- Following a document or site
- Following a tag and tagging an item
- Birthday celebration
- Job title change
- Workplace anniversary
- Updating ‘ask me about’
- Posting on a note board
- Liking or rating something
- New blog post
- Community participation
All of the above bullet points bring a social element to following in SharePoint 2013. For example, with community participation, your followers can be notified when you join a community, start a discussion and reach the next achievement level.
Follow people that you wish to stay connected with. For example, you may wish to follow people that are working on a project with you or someone that is helping you to solve a problem.
Documents – following documents allows you to monitor certain elements of document administration, informing you when a certain document was edit or deleted for example. All of this information can be accessed from a followed documents page which provides a needs feed notification for followed documents. This acts as a single point of access where you can keep a record of documents that you have an interest in, such as project management or business critical documentation.
Sites – allowing you to monitor all conversations that are happening on a SharePoint site in your following view via newsfeed. This can be setup from the sites hub.
#Tags – introducing any conversations into your follower view that use the #tag. Everyone is using hash tags now so make sure you get involved! You can view all of the tags you are following from Edit Profile experience.
Following is a great addition to SharePoint 2013. It provides you with a configurable aggregated view of information encourages interaction between colleagues and improves internal communication.
