SharePoint 2013 doesn’t just include a series of fantastic new features for the end user; it has also been greatly improved for the benefit of IT Professionals. These improvements include streamlined administration processes and enhanced automated services.
A section of many improvements are as follows:
Deferring of Site collection upgrades. Enabling upgrades from SharePoint Server 2010 to 2013 without having to upgrade user sites or their content. Upgrades are ‘deferred’ to the end user, allowing them to choose when they wish to upgrade to 2013. End user can also experience an evaluation of SharePoint 2013 before committing to upgrade.
System Status notifications. Delivering important system status notifications during SharePoint upgrades or system maintenance. System wide notifications delivered through a site banner keep end users up to date, reducing the pressure placed on IT resources.
Automated PowerPoint services. Automated conversion of PowerPoint presentations to alternative formats, including PDF for protection from editing, or for users that do not have the PowerPoint application installed.
Evaluation site collections. Allowing administrators to request a site preview prior to site collection upgrades. Both administrators and users can assess the impact of changes to their site before committing to upgrade.
User profile service. Featuring many new options that will allow for greater flexibility when administrating user profiles. Added profile import options include direct Active Directory syncronisation, Microsoft Forefront identity manager and an external identity manager.
App Management. Managing SharePoint Applications is much easier thanks to the new App Management Service, which also allows you to manage permissions and licensing weather installed locally or via the marketplace.
SharePoint 2013 also features native support for Power Shell 3.0, a distributed cache service for reduced loading times and a request management rules engine for identifying incoming requests and delivering a correct response.
